Masters or Ph.D. in Mathematics with a Minor in Computer Science

The Graduate School regulations allow candidates for Master's and Ph.D. degrees to seek minors in other subject areas. General guidelines can be found in the graduate catalog.

For a minor with a Master's degree, a student must complete a minimum of eight credits in the Department of Computer Science . At least one member of the Department of Computer Science must be on the Master's final examination committee. The graduate studies committee of the Department of Mathematical Sciences requires that a Master's degree candidate interested in a computer science minor contact a member of the Department of Computer Science early in the candidate's residency, so that an appropriate and sensible program can be laid out. This program must meet the approval of a member of the Department of Computer Science, the student's advisor, and the Graduate Studies Committee of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. No student should feel that completion of 8 credits of course work in the Department of Computer Science entitles the student to declare a minor in the subject.

For a minor with a Ph.D. degree there are more requirements to be fulfilled. A minor with the Ph.D. degree normally requires 12 credits of course work, the approval of the the head of the Department of Computer Science, and the approval of the Dean of the Graduate School. Moreover, the Department of Computer Science will be represented at the student's comprehensive and final examinations. It is therefore extremely important that a Ph.D student interested in a computer science minor contact a member of the Department of Computer Science early for advice and planning. For the Ph.D degree the program must meet the approval of the student's advisers in the two departments, the head of the Department of Computer Science, the Graduate Studies Committee of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, and the Dean of the Graduate School. No student should feel that completion of 12 credits of work in the Department of Computer Science automatically entitles the student to declare a minor in the subject.

At present the Department of Computer Science is prepared to offer students the opportunities to obtain minors in the following computer science specialities.

Specialty Contact
Theory and Algorithms D. Ranjan or H. Leung
Architecture and Systems A. Karshmer or J. Pfeiffer
Software Development M. Auguston or J. Cook

When more courses are in place, the Department of Computer Science will offer a minor in the speciality of Computational Science and Engineering. The contact person for this area is S. Aluru.

General information about courses relevant to the various specialties can be extracted from the web page of the Department of Computer Science; specific information relevant to tailoring a program to the needs and backgrounds of an individual student is best obtained by consultation with faculty members of the Department.
