The Great Southwestern Math Contest

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is pleased to announce the winners of the 2009 annual version of the Great Southwestern Mathematics Contest. On Wednesday, April 8, 44 teams from six different New Mexico high schools logged into the contest web site on WEB-CT and spent 3 hours solving challenging mathematics problems.

The winners are: first place Las Cruces High School; second place Onate High School; third place a tie between two Onate High School teams; fourth place was a three way tie between teams from Las Cruces High School, Onate High School and Mayfield High School; fifth place was a two way tie between Carlsbad High School and Mayfield High School.

There was an Awards Ceremony with prizes, food, a talk on probability by Dr. Stanford, and a discussion of the contest problems on Wednesday, May 13, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. The top placing team members each received a copy of Scientific Notebook, donated by MacKichan Software, Inc. Every other student on a placing team received a book on mathematics.

The Department ofMathematical Sciences at NMSU started this contest in Spring 2002.
