The Great Southwestern
Math Contest
The Department of Mathematical Sciences is pleased to announce the
winners of the 2007 annual version of the Great Southwestern
Mathematics
Contest. They are: first place Las Cruces High School,
second place Las
Cruces High School, third place Las Cruces High School,
fourth place Las
Cruces High School, fifth and sixth place Mayfield
School. On Wednesday,
April 4, 35 teams from five different New Mexico high
schools logged
into WEB-CT and spent 2.5 hours solving challenging
mathematics
problems. There was an Awards Ceremony with prizes,
food and a
discussion of the contest problems for the winning
teams on Thursday,
April 26 at 5:30 p.m. The ceremony began right after
a special
Mathematics Awareness week lecture on Mathematics and
the Mind, 4:00
p.m.-5:00 p.m. by Dr. Jim Kroger. The top placing team
members each
received a copy of Scientific Notebook. Every other
student on a placing
team received a book on mathematics.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at NMSU started this contest
in
