Admission requirements and instructions for prospective graduate students

Students seeking admission to graduate study in Mathematics at New Mexico State University must fulfill general requirements for admission to the graduate school and specific requirements for admission to the programs in Mathematics. The graduate school's general requirements are summarized below; for complete information see the Graduate Catalog. Following the summary of the graduate school requirements we detail the department's additional requirements.

Summary of Graduate School Requirements
Students seeking admission to graduate study at New Mexico State University must hold a bachelor's degree or an advanced degree from an institution of acceptable standing. The program of preparation should be substantially equivalent in the distribution of academic subject matter to the requirements for a comparable degree at New Mexico State University.

The minimum grade point average required for admission to a Master's program is 3.0 overall or 3.0 in the last half of undergraduate studies. A person with a master's degree (or its equivalent) must have a graduate grade-point average of at least 3.0 to be considered for admission to the doctoral program.

Formal application accompanied by a $30 non-refundable application fee, is required of all prospective domestic students. This includes graduates of New Mexico State University who seek admission to the Graduate School.

For a complete description of graduate school requirements, see The Graduate School .

Foreign students must apply through the Center for International Programs. The "International Application for Admission" requires a nonrefundable $50 application fee. The application form as well as a detailed explanation of any other requirements can be found at The Center for International Programs.

Department of Mathematical Sciences Application Requirements

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers graduate instruction leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Students applying for regular admission to graduate study in mathematics are expected to have 24 credits of upper-division courses in mathematics and statistics, including a 3-credit course in modern algebra and a 3-credit course in modern analysis. Students failing to meet these requirements may be admitted with deficiencies and allowed to complete the requirements at New Mexico State University.

The minimum application to be admitted as a regular graduate student in mathematics includes

1. a completed Graduate School admission application,

International Graduate Students

Domestic Graduate Students

2. complete transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work,

3. application fee

  • Domestic students: $30 should be sent (check or money order to the order of NMSU) sent to the graduate school.
  • International students: $50 should be sent (check or money order to the order of NMSU) to the office of international programs.

4. three letters of recommendation (may be obtained here or by writing to gradcomm@nmsu.edu) from professors, employers, or others who are qualified to judge your potential for graduate work in mathematics,

5. a one-page statement of educational objectives, and

6. the scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) aptitude tests (if available).

7. unofficial copy of transcript

8. scores from TOEFL

Items 1, 2, 3, and 8 should be submitted to the Graduate School by domestic applicants, and to the Center for International Programs by international applicants. Items 4, 5, 6 and 7 should be submitted to the Department of Mathematical Sciences. See addresses below. The score in the GRE subject test in mathematics is not required by the Department of Mathematical Sciences, but if available, it may be used to help allocate available teaching assistantships among entering students.

Our Departmental Policy is to admit students to the PhD program only when they have a Master's degree in Mathematics. Such students admitted directly to the PhD program are given four years of support (with the possibility to petition for a fifth) to complete their degree. Students who do not have a Master's degree in Mathematics are accepted into our Master's program even if their intention is to complete a PhD degree. Students in this circumstance are given a total of five years of support (with the possibility to petition for a sixth) to complete their Master's and PhD degree. As the course work for the Master's degree is required for PhD courses and PhD comprehensive exams, the work done for the Master's is necessary for such students to complete their PhD.

To assure full considerations for admission, candidates should submit their applications by the following deadlines. However, interested students are strongly advised to contact our department (jharding@nmsu.edu) and submit applications well in advance of these deadlines as we will begin reviewing applications for the Fall in early Spring.
